DPS Asks for Caution on Outdoor Burning

The Dept of Public Safety is encouraging everyone to use caution when doing outdoor burns.  The unusually dry weather this season has greatly increased risks of a wildfire.  DPS has responded to several grass fires this month as a result of the dry conditions.

Burn Permits are required Oct 15-May 15, and can be obtained by calling 877-350-2876.  We also ask that you notify the 911 Dispatcher on duty when you are going to burn by calling 296-7792.

October is Fire Safety Month!  Please be safe and observe these safety tips:

FIRE SAFETY TIPS
If you want to have a fire outdoors, take these steps:

• Make sure you are complying with local laws. Apply for state burn permits by calling the local Division of Forestry at (877) 350-BURN (2876)
• Check weather reports. If it is windy or expected to become windy, postpone burning.
• Clear a circle to the bare earth that is 2 to 5 feet wider than the debris pile.
• Have a shovel or rake and keep a bucket of water and/or a hose at the fire.
• Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure it is fully extinguished.
• If your house is in a forested area, keep gutters and rooftops free of debris, don’t have landscaping next to the foundation of the home and clear brush at least 30 feet from the house.
