Drug Indictments Served

Dec. 9, 2014

The Waverly Police Department ended a year-long drug investigation with the indictment of 14 people last week.  The indictments include charges for the sale of prescription drugs and marijuana.

The abuse of prescription drugs has become a large problem for many communities including Waverly.  “This represents a year-long effort by the Police Department to help combat the drug problem in our community. Many of us can easily name someone in our lives who are affected by prescription drug abuse” said Chief Grant Gillespie.  “This investigation focused on illegal prescription drug sales.”

Detective Jonathan Fortner was the lead investigator in the case.  Several vehicles used in the transactions were seized under civil forfeiture laws and will be sold at auction.  The proceeds of the sale will go into the special drug fund which helps fund drug law enforcement.  Most of the indictments were served last week by members of the Waverly Police Department’s Special Response Team (SRT).

“The Waverly Police Department is committed to keeping Waverly a drug free community.  The officers involved in this investigation have put in many hours and hard work on these cases,” said Chief Gillespie.

Drug enforcement is a continuing effort by the department.  Anyone having information concerning drug activity in the City of Waverly is encouraged to report it by calling the Waverly Police Department at 296-4300 or they can remain anonymous by calling Crimestoppers at 296-2414.
