On Friday, September 2 around 7:30am the Humphreys County 911 Center received a call of a bomb threat at Waverly Junior High School. The caller told the dispatcher there was a bomb at the school and hung up. Police Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the scene and school officials were notified. According to Police Chief David Daniel the caller appeared to be a young female. “Even though the call was suspected to be a prank the school was evacuated and searched as a precaution” Daniel said. There were no bombs found and classes returned to normal within two hours.

WPD Captain Grant Gillespie was on the scene and said “The WJHS principal and staff remained calm and handled the situation professionally.” Waverly Police Detectives along with School Resource Deputy Greg Triplett are working with the telephone service provider to determine where the call originated. Chief Daniel said making a bomb threat is very serious and is now a Class C felony punishable by jail time.
