Suspect Charged in Arson Fire

On Saturday morning, April 13 around 2 am, the Waverly Department of Public Safety responded to a structure fire at the old Waverly Junior High School at 520 East Main St.  When officers arrived, they found flames coming through the roof near the main entrance.  The Waverly Fire Department worked into the morning to extinguish the flames.

“This was a difficult and dangerous fire to work because it was largely inside the roof structure of the building,” said Chief Grant Gillespie.

As the investigation into the cause of the fire began, it became apparent that the fire was intentionally set.  The TN State Fire Marshall’s Office and the TN Bureau of Investigation were called to assist in the forensic investigation of the fire scene.

As the investigation progressed, a suspect was identified and on Friday, April 19 warrants were obtained by the Waverly Police Department charging Timothy Marrs, 18, of Waverly with Arson and Criminal Trespassing.  Marrs was booked in the Humphreys County Jail and is being held on $30,000 bond.

The investigation into the fire remains ongoing and anyone who has information to provide is asked to contact Detective Michael Hubbs at 931-296-4300.
