Firefighters Attend TN Fire Academy

June 12th, 2009 Waverly Firefighters Corey Burkett, Robert Edwards, and Jason Herndon graduated from the Tennessee Fire Academy. They were required to complete a two week course on Basic/Live Firefighting. This course provided them with the basic fire ground skills to participate in “live” fire training activities.  They participated in classroom instruction and practical skills related to live fire scenarios.  Burkett currently works full time for the City of Waverly as a Water Department Supervisor. ...

DPS Trains on Emergency Response to Railroad Incidents

  On May 26, members of the Department of Public Safety attended a course on Emergency Response to Railroad Incidents conducted by officials from CSX Railroad.  The course covered safety around railroad cars and tracks and dealt with handling hazardous materials carried by the railroad.  The course was taught by Jim Briski, Hazmat Supervisor for CSX.  Jack Oddn, an employee of CSX who survived the 1978 Waverly Train Disaster, spoke about his experiences during the days of the disaster and...

WPD Conducts Weekend Saturation Patrols

The Waverly Police Department conducted Saturation Patrols during this past Memorial Day Weekend.  The patrols were conducted to enhance traffic safety during this period which included our high school graduation. During the weekend which was from Friday, May 22 thru Monday May 25, Waverly Police Officers conducted 87 traffic stops and answered 69 calls for service.  As a result of these field contacts, 31 Citations were issued and 14 arrests and/or misdemeanor citations were issued for: Traffic...

Sparky Visits Waverly Pre-K

On May 19, Officer Joe Parnell and Sparky visisted the Waverly Elementary School’s Pre-K classes.  Fire Safety was the subject of the day.  The children learned what to do in case of a fire at home and how to contact the Fire Department in case of an emergency.  The children learned the concept of how smoke rises and how they need to crawl from a smoke filled room.  The classes also got a close-up experience as they got to explore through the Waverly Fire Department’s Engine 7.  Since...

Operation Pivot Point
